October News

posted Sep 30, 2012 23:56:08 by lawrence.whitaker
Been a while since I sent out a news bulletin, so here's an update on where we're at.

First, thank you to everyone who has bought a copy of RQ6. Sales have been very good, and we're close to exhausting our first print-run. Sales have, at least, met our expectations, and its great to be in a position to continue the line, which was always our key goal.

Second, Errata. We will produce an official errata document in PDF shortly. I've deliberately held-off doing this as little errors continue to trickle in. The Errata document will fix the small things people have flagged-up, and when we come to issue a second print, the master files will be updated with all fixes.

Next, Star Wars Hack. You can expect this imminently. Its laid-out, proofed, and awaiting a final check before going live. 48 hours or so from this post. Oh, and it's completely free. Just like RQ Firearms.

Fourth, future releases. Its a toss-up between whether Monster Island or Book of Quests will be released first, but we're aiming for end of year for both books. Its possible Book of Quests will be delayed a little, meaning a January 2013 release, and this is due mainly to the amount of cartography required. However, both books are due to fo through editing and artwork is already commissioned. We hope to share cover illustrations (by messrs Quidault and Hodgson) in the next few weeks.

Finally, what do we have planned for 2013? Well, there will be the Super-Secret licensed game for one, and I'll reveal its title as a Christmas Present to our customers and supporters. We will also be working on Mythics Briton, Greece and Constantinople. We should also be able to give some definitive news on our Glorantha plans too. There is a Dream Team in the assembly to work on the Glorantha material and although it won't see release until 2014, it should be worth the wait.

In short, lots happening. Its been a good year for RQ and Design Mechanism and we look forward to more success and great books.

Loz

Excellent news all the way. Getting the monster and quest book definitely. Any plans on NPC pdf's for the 3 Moon Design books?

Though I wouldn't call 2014 for Glorantha "Good News". I at least know that I wouldn't have to expect it anytime soon and I can stop to check this forum so frequently ;)

Very nice to hear that RQ6 sells even better than expected, but no wonder, as it is a great system!

I'm so glad RQ has sold enough that the line can go forward! It looks like an exciting time to come.

Wonderful news! I look forward to seeing more monsters and more examples of how adventures in RQ are structured.

It is great to hear that sales have been good - but yes, I find the news that Glorantha stuff is still only at the 'assembling the team' stage and isn't expected until 2014 actually very disappointing news. I'd really love to see something, even if it loose guidelines on how to adapt the existing rules (suitable for use by people who already own a great deal fo existing Gloranthan product for previous RQ editions) before then.

Nice to know there will be new product by end of year, though!

Mythic Briton?

Is this going to be Arthurian or Beowulf?

Far more Beowulf (although he's actually Danish) than Arthurian age of chivalry.

Sounds great!, My gaming group had been tired of the constant changing of game systems of late, especially since we game once per month. I need a well supported system. That given, I would be interested in more RQ6 material from you guys (As shown by the exemplar works that is RQ6 rule book). The line up looks good. I'm definitely getting the monster island and book of quests.

Although I already have the physical copy, I'm willing to buy an additional second print if there if it is hard backed.

Is there any plans for first party modules?

Anyways the future looks bright :)

The problem with Glorantha is, that all of us playing 3rd age are more or less doing the same thing, defining the boundaries, adapting the cults, the magic, the combat styles, defining trainers (they are mentioned in Pavis but not statted) and so on, and it's not a huge deal of work if you look at it bit per bit, but nevertheless I have been busy non stop since our campaign started tying up loose ends, defining cults, brotherhoods, and other organisations, generating 500 NPC's for the Moon Design Books, and so on. The amount of work on top of preparing adventures has been staggering, and I still have to paint 250 more miniatures (could be 500, dunno) and a few dozen foamboard houses for Pavis in between. I fail to see how someone without 30 years in Glorantha could handle it, I'm freewheeling 60% of the time.

Now meanwhile I am advancing with this nonetheless, and by the time I'm done I worry there's gonna be an official document defining all those things I just did, but not exactly the same, and I'll have to do some grand scale adaptation again. So yes, a framework of some kind so that we know what way we're heading with magic, cults, spirits, rune-lord and rune-priests, and so on would be great. A follow up set of NPC stats for Pavis would be brilliant as well, if done with some love and fantasy I'd gladly fork out some extra cash.

This is precisely what we're working on. There's a draft framework for cults currently with Moon Design for approval (they proof and approve any Gloranthan material we do) and if this passes the acid test it will form the basis of Adventures in Glorantha.

So Glorantha is happening, but its going to take time. Meanwhile, we continue work on non-Gloranthan releases which are far easier to get out of the door.

I like the schedule Design Mechanism has set.

Use the next year to build the new RQ brand as its own property outside of Glorantha. That should be acomplished by the Mythic Series and this mystery Science Fantasy Graphic Novel License coming during 2013.

This also gives Moon Design Publishing a chance to release The Guide to Glorantha which along with some other planned Glorantha releases should attract new customers to the Glorantha and RQ* brand.

Then in 2014 the RQ and Glorantha new bloods will be ambushed by the full power and glory that will be Adventures in Glorantha.

*Heroquest is a great game but some gamers like to roll their dice with more chrunch to the rules. ;)

This is just a thought... Your game is your game, and Your Glorantha May Vary. I think your players will greatly appreciate *your* version of the setting with the personalized touches that really work for you and your group. Official documents are great resources, but the only "official" that matters is the way you interpret the resources that are available. If it’s not exactly the same, I’d say that’s actually a very good thing.
