Staff sling typo?

posted Feb 12, 2013 17:57:14 by chryckan
Is the range for the staff sling a typo in the chart on pg 98?

Because its range is shorter than that of a thrown rock. Now that can't be right?

Away from books at the moment. Could you post the 3 range numbers for thrown rock and staff sling? I'd bet the Close range for thrown rock is better, but Staff Sling has better Medium and Long ranges. The reasoning would be that the Staff Sling has more force and range, but is a bit difficult to be precise with, which is why you have to be reeeeeealy close to do Choose Location. As was discussed extensively in the Weapon Ranges thread elsewhere on this forum, there's no accuracy penalty for firing at ranges further than Close, just limitations on Special Effects and the striking force.

I have a feeling you're right. It looks like Staff Sling and Stone/Rock are transposed, but I'll go back to the original notes and double check them.

Yes, I believe we got the ranges transposed, so one for our errata file.

The Staff Sling range bands should therefore be: 5/25/50

An interesting fact, as discussed in this article, is not the range of the staff sling but the power it imparts - so the damage and Force ratings for the staff sling remain correct as printed.

Staff sling 5/10/20
Stone/rock 5/25/50
Those numbers are not about game mechanics. They are just illogical.

That was what I suspected. Thanks. :)

Another cool thing I like about staff sling is that due to their higher arc compared to slings (and bows) they were ideal as siege weapons being able to lob stones over fortress walls.

Basically, a sling was the cannon of the time while the staff sling was the howitzer/mortar.

Another cool thing about slings was that they wrote insults on the stone like its done on modern day bombs.
