Design Mechanism Google+ Community

posted Mar 21, 2013 22:38:57 by lawrence.whitaker
We already have a Facebook page, and to ensure that we keep up to date in the social media sphere, I've created a Google+ Community. Its a public membership community - search for it under Design Mechanism, or visit

It doesn't replace our forum, which will always be the first-line of comms, but it offers another arena for discussions and has the ability to reach a lot more people. The Hangouts also offer the chance for us to host special voice and video events, and this may even include the odd Hangout game or two, time permitting.

Looks like I'll have to figure out how this "Google+" thing works after all...

Ditto - my thoughts are much the same as yours on this subject, Akrasia.

I find it clunky and user unfriendly - no doubt my age showing through

Subscribed though

I prefer it to Facebook. It does support communities much more easily. Setting up the DM Facebook page was a bloody nightmare; setting up the G+ community was, by contrast, a doddle.

And there does seem to be a very strong gaming presence on G+, which means it makes sense for us to join it. The hangouts and chat facilities are very useful (Pete and I use G+ Hangouts instead of Skype these days).

I understand using Google+ Hangouts for actual play, but I don't have a clue about why/how to use it for anything else. It's strange because there seems to be a lot going on there but I can't find anything.

Originally your 'circled' people who were making interesting posts. These were usually people with similar interests to your own.

Recently Google added a feature called 'Communities' which people join and post to. Loz has added a Design Mechanism Community which is similar to this forum in that people can post to the various areas and get help or information.

I'm in the D100 games Community, several Tabletop Gaming communities, a G+ Hangouts Community where people arrange games, a UK Role Players community and UK/GMT G+ Hangouts Community.

If you can't find things going on you aren't looking in the right place :-)
